Our Origin Story
From a Soweto kitchen to tables across South Africa.
Grease Junky was born from a deep love for authentic South African flavours. What started as a passion project in a Soweto kitchen quickly became something bigger. A few pots, a handful of trusted peppers, a recipe tested again and again until it felt just right.
Friends and family were the first to taste, and their honest reactions shaped everything that followed. Word spread from one kitchen to the next, and soon people who had never met us were asking where they could get a bottle of their own.

GREASE JUNKY was born from a passion for authentic South African flavours. Established in Soweto in 2023, our family business brings the rich culinary heritage of Soweto to tables across South Africa and beyond.

Starting as a homemade venture in 2023, we’ve grown our operations in 2025 while maintaining our commitment to quality and authenticity. Every bottle carries the essence of our Soweto roots and family traditions.

Our vision is to expand GREASE JUNKY into townships across South Africa and eventually into the retail market, sharing the true taste of Soweto with every South African family — and beyond our borders.

Behind every bottle of Grease Junky is Thobile Shongwe — the heart of this business and the person who turned a love of cooking into a brand with real ambition and real purpose.
Thobile grew up surrounded by Soweto’s food culture, learning that the right spice at the right moment can transform an ordinary meal into a memory. Building a business from a home kitchen is not easy — she wore every hat, learned every lesson, guided by one simple belief: if the product is honest and the flavour is true, people will notice.
